Big claims from Germany - Newcastle eyeing Dortmund star if top target doesn't sign?
It's been well-documented that Sporting Director Paul Mitchell is pushing the club to look overseas for value-for-money signings this month.
Premier League duo Bryan Mbeumo and Antoine Semenyo appear too expensive, so it's interesting to see the latest name linked with a potential move to St James' Park this month
Continental approaches for Johan Bakayoko and Abdukodir Khusanov have failed to materialise into anything so far, but the latest link is another one to watch if we're continuing to shop in Europe.
Dortmund star on Newcastle's radar?
According to reports in Germany, Newcastle are rivalling Aston Villa in their pursuit of Borussia Dortmund forward Donyell Malen.
German outlet BILD report that we have another unnamed right-winger in mind, but are keen on Malen and could make a move for the Dutchman if our top target doesn't sign.
The report states that Newcastle, along with Tottenham, are discussing internally whether or not they should attempt to hijack a deal for the former PSV star, realising we may have to act quickly with Aston Villa already in talks.
The Bundesliga club are thought to want £25-30million for Malen, with Villa currently offering around £18million for the 25-year-old.
Malen has already impressed at St James' Park
Looking at his profile, a move for Malen could makes sense. He has plenty of years ahead of him at 25, is available at an affordable price and is a versatile forward able to play up front or down either flank.
Malen is no stranger to St James' Park after impressing in our 1-0 defeat against Dortmund in the Champions League during the 2022/23 season, shining on the right side of a front three that day.
It sounds as though Villa are serious about signing him, meaning we may need to be quick if our interest in as genuine as the German paper claims.
However, we seem to scout a lot of similar players and both are on a similar trajectory, so this probably won’t be the last time we compete with the Villans in the transfer market.
