Newcastle now in contact with Leeds over January deal - Report

Outgoings have so far been the focus of a pretty quiet January transfer window on Tyneside so far.

Miguel Almiron is set to seal an £11m move back to Atlanta United, Lloyd Kelly has interest from abroad and Sean Longstaf is thought to be up for sale.

However, there's another Mag who has today been linked with a potential move away as we enter the final seven days of the January window.

Leeds in contact over late deal?

According to The Athletic, Leeds United are eyeing up a late move for Newcastle United's forgotten man Matt Targett.

Chris Waugh reports that the promotion-chasing Championship side have 'enquired' about the left-back's availability ahead of next Monday's deadline.

It's thought Targett is available for transfer and could be one to watch over the next week, with the 29-year-old struggling for game time now Lewis Hall has established himself as Eddie Howe's first choice left-back.

Targett has 18 months left on his contract and will be eager for game time after just one start all season, which came in our 3-1 win over Bromley in the FA Cup earlier this month.

This isn't the first time he's been linked with a January exit, with talkSPORT recently reporting on loan interest from Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt and Belgian giants Anderlecht.

Targett move a mistake?

It may seem easy to say in hindsight, but the club may be regretting their decision to sign Targett permanently after a solid initial loan spell.

He did a good job to help us stay up in Howe's first half-season in charge, but the £15m permanent move that followed has not went to plan.

It quickly became clear that the club were striving for better than the former Aston Villa man, who is steady but unspectacular, on good wages (that are possibly hampering our ability to move him on now) and has spent the majority of the last few seasons struggling with injuries.

Hopefully he can find a move soon, with the full-back in need of a fresh start after just three Premier League appearances over the past season and a half.
