Emotional Eddie Howe issues goodbye message as Newcastle confirm two January exits

Newcastle United have confirmed two departures this afternoon, announcing permanent exits for a well-known winger and U21 talent who has left for the National League.

After widespread reports of an agreement being reached, Miguel Almiron has completed a move to MLS side Atlanta United.

The fee is thought to be in the region of £10m, bringing an end to his six-year stay at St James' Park, where Rafa Benitez brought him to Tyneside in a £21m deal back in 2019.

Almiron leaves to Eddie Howe tribute

Speaking to the club's official website, Eddie Howe has paid tribute to 'Miggy', calling him the "ultimate professional" and "great person" who will be missed "greatly" by everyone at the club.

"On behalf of the club, I want to thank Miggy for everything he has given us during our time together," Howe said.

"He has been the ultimate professional, and he has been a big part of some of our most memorable moments in recent seasons.

"He is a great person and we'll miss him greatly, but this is the right move at the right time for him and his family and we wish them well."

Miley senior departs

Jamie Miley - the older brother of Lewis - has also left on a permanent deal, joining National League side Hartlepool United.

The 21-year-old was recalled from a loan spell with League Two side Newport County earlier this month and was out of contract at the end of the 2024/25 campaign.

Miley impressed briefly over pre-season, starting in wins over Hull and Girona, but his 10-year stay comes to an end after joining the club's Academy at the age of 11.

Reacting to the news, Academy director Steve Harper said: "This is a great opportunity at the right time for Jamie and I'm sure he'll be a big success at Hartlepool.

"I'd like to thank Jamie for his efforts over many years and wish him the very best of luck for the future."
