St James' Park turns sour and so many stinkers - Five takeaways from Newcastle 1-2 Brighton

Newcastle United fell to a devastating 1-2 defeat at the hands of Brighton on Sunday as they exited the FA Cup at the 5th rd stage. United lost as the dearth of quality backup in the squad was horribly exposed by a side that were ably assisted by the referee on an afternoon when everything seemed to go wrong.

Alexander Isak opened the scoring from the penalty spot before Yankuba Minteh equalised just before half time. Danny Welbeck scored the winner late in extra time.

Here are our five key takeaways from the game:

Sunday was one of the worst games of football I’ve ever watched. United were terrible, Brighton were awful and the officiating was abysmal. There was no quality to be found as passes were constantly misplaced, the quality of chances created barely registered on the xG scale, and ref couldn’t tell a foul from his ****hole. And to top it all off, Anthony Gordon may’ve managed to get us knocked out of two cups on the same day with an act of utter petulance.

Willock missed a glorious chance to win the game by going to head the ball with his eyes closed. The game was error strewn in the extreme with Tonali and Schar enduring individual performances to forget. But what is worrying in the extreme is that teams now appear to have a blueprint to beat us at SJP at will, as we’ve now lost to Brighton, Fulham, and Bournemouth in three out of the last four home games.

It's been a long time since I’ve been this down about Newcastle United and this total headloss has come at exactly the wrong time in the season.

Newcastle’s squad has major technical deficiencies, as we all know, probably not even on the same level as Sunday’s opponents. But what is deeply, deeply concerning about the squad at the minute is its mentality, or the complete lack of. It was Groundhog Day as the team fell into familiar failing patterns of play, as the terribly imbalanced side struggled to break Brighton down in the second half and extra time.

Brighton were happy to let Jacob Murphy have the ball as they knew he wouldn’t threaten. Schar gave the ball away over and over trying Hollywood passes out from the back (something he has done on multiple occasions this year). Gordon looks like he’s been found out. Tonali has dropped back-to-back poor performances. Wilson was terrible again (and he is more than likely finished as a footballer at this level). Targett and Barnes were anonymous, with the latter's lack of impact a big worry now he may be needed for our next three games

And to top it all off, Eddie Howe is starting to repeat the same mistakes in team selection and tactical setup that have hindered us in drops of form over the last three seasons too.

Honestly, it’s like this club is cursed. We get so close to achieving something that we can almost reach out and touch it, but we're back in danger of fall painfully short...again.

At just the wrong time in the season United appear to be succumbing to injuries after we had mercifully been relatively injury free in 2024/25. Lewis Hall could be out for a while after it was revealed he needs to see a specialist for an ankle injury, which is a huge worry.

Sven Botman is struggling to recover from a persistent knee injury. Isak felt a tightness and had to be subbed off. Trippier has a potential back injury. Joelinton isn’t 100% fit and Livramento was really struggling with cramp late in the game.

What made the Tino cramp situation even more galling was the fact that when you go to extra time in the FA Cup you get an extra sub. Why didn’t Krafth come on to replace him, when Tino was clearly struggling? And then of course it’s Tino who is deepest playing Welbeck onside for Brighton’s winner. It was an utter shambles.

Throw in Gordon’s three game ban (it won’t get overturned on appeal, trust me) and we appear to be going into the Carabao Cup final with the squad decimated by injury, a key player suspended, and the mentality shot.

The standard of refereeing in this country is absolutely in the toilet. Taylor had no control over that game, allowed gamesmanship to reign supreme and fell for all the ****housery every single time.

The blatant van Hecke foul on halfway in the second half was one of the clearest yellow cards I’ve ever seen, and he just ignored it. He fell for play acting every time, let freekicks and thrown ins be taken from literally anywhere, and failed to award obvious freekicks over and over.

He was scared to make decisions and was over reliant on the technology. It was a frankly shocking display of officiating, and mark my words, if Taylor referees the cup final we will lose.

It certainly felt like it at the final whistle and it will feel like it until United get a decent result in a game of football again. Everything around the side feels lacklustre and recent performances threaten to see all the hard work chucked away as the mood really starts to sour on Tyneside.

Sunday was a horrible reminder of the type of luck and quality that has been around St. James’ for generations now. I feel so deflated, as apparently things can never be simple for United. It was also dispiriting just how poor the atmosphere was inside the stadium.

A flat feeling at the end of the game is fair and it was clear just how down, despondent and angry yesterday's events left so many in the crowd as they trudged out of the stadium, but it was quiet for most of the 120 minutes and felt nothing like a match where a place in the last eight of the FA Cup was on the line. It's a concerning trend and has to change, whichever stadium we end up in.

Back to matters on the pitch, if our worst fears are confirmed and Hall’s injury is long term, in tandem with Gordon’s suspension, then the lefthand side will be threadbare for the cup final and beyond. I suppose that will make it all the sweeter if we do win the Carabao Cup, but it looks like a hell of a mountain to climb from here.
