"Livid" Newcastle star blasted three players after FA Cup slip - Report

An experienced Newcastle United star was fuming with three of his teammates after multiple lapses of judgement against Brighton.

Unenthusiastic Newcastle coasted to a third home defeat in five as Fabian Hurzeler’s Seagulls progressed to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup with Danny Welbeck’s extra-time winner the difference maker after both sides went down to 10-men.

Anthony Gordon and Tariq Lamptey both received their marching orders, the latter giving away the free-kick that ultimately led to Fabian Schar smashing into the back of the net - only for VAR to rule it out and keep the game level.

It was a moment much earlier in the game that had a veteran Mag questioning his team mates in what was another sloppy performance from Eddie Howe’s side.

Trippier furious with three Mags

According to The Chronicle, a "livid" Kieran Trippier was openly critical of a few fellow Toon defenders after their lapse for the Seagulls’ decisive equaliser at St James’ Park on Sunday.

The ex-England international slumped to the turf, arms flung wide towards the rest of the backline after they were exposed by a seemingly innocuous Lamptey throw-in, screaming "where were you?!" to all three.

Joao Pedro exchanged a slick one-two with Yankuba Minteh before the ex-Mag darted free and slotted the ball past Martin Dubravka. 

Dan Burn and Tino Livramento were both caught glaringly out of position, while Fabian Schar was way off the pace and umable to stop Minteh as he burst clean through. Trippier meanwhile had scrambled across to stop the Gambian's effort, but his challenge would only deflect the shot past Dubravka to make it 1-1. 

The visibly frustrated 34-year-old sat in the six-yard box and looked back at the scene that had unfolded behind him, perhaps questioning the commitment of his colleagues after covering more ground than anyone else to get across.

It was also noticeable in the build up just how slow Anthony Gordon was to react, as Minteh left the sent-off winger for dead as he failed to track his runner from bursting in behind.

Botman and Hall a huge miss

Sven Botman and Lewis Hall were a huge miss in the Newcastle back line against Brighton and it feels like they can't come back soon enough after the state of Sunday's disjointed display.

Schar has looked way off the pace, both in and out of possession, since the turn of the year, while Burn has also struggled after a strong start to the season.

At 33 and 32 respectively, the minutes they have played this season have clearly caught up to them with both looking their age on current form.

Hall in particular has been brilliant at both ends. The left-back was the Man of the Match against Nottingham Forest after his involvement in three of our four goals in a frantic 11 minutes against our Champions League pushing rivals.

Against Liverpool his defensive efforts earned him praise against the usually unstoppable Mo Salah, making him vital to how we play at both ends.
