No shame from Rio Ferdinand on Newcastle United transfer - Dream on, Man Utd!
Delusional Rio Ferdinand proved that he continues to live in the past in his latest transfer talk centred around a certain Newcastle United star.
The 46-year-old won six Premier Leagues and a Champions League as part of a once-great Manchester United team that has since fallen far from the heights of the Sir Alex Ferguson era.
In the time since Ferdinand’s retirement in 2015 the landscape has changed. Liverpool won the league on Sunday before Man Utd even reached 40 points, the total historically suggested as the amount needed to ensure Premier League survival.
Currently competing for the Champions League places are Newcastle, who have already secured European football for the second time in three seasons, and Aston Villa who are looking to qualify for the competition for a second consecutive season.
Man Utd are miles off and have been run like a circus in recent years. But, the way Ferdinand talks about Ruben Amorim’s chances of signing one of our key men, you would think they still posed a threat at the top of the table...
Ferdinand living in dreamland
Based on Rio Ferdinand's latest suggestion, you would not think Manchester United are currently 14th in the Premier League and facing the very real possibility of no European football next season.
The debate around Alexander Isak's future is inevitable when we own arguably the best striker on the planet, leaving most pundits discussing potential moves and who could try to sign him.
Top clubs will try - and more than likely fail - but you have to laugh when a potential move to Old Trafford is mooted when we currently sit 11 places and 23 points above Rio's former club.
In his opening line on transfer talk around Isak, Ferdinand said:
"Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, United (Man Utd)...where would you go if you were him? I think he lives in that ilk...he has the impact like that if he goes to Liverpool.“I think he could go to Madrid or something like that, I think he should go to Madrid. He can’t go to Liverpool, he can’t go to Liverpool. I don’t want to see this type of dominance, Jesus!"
Newcastle bullish on Isak
The Telegraph reported today that Newcastle chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan has told the club to reject all offers for Alexander Isak with the talisman considered a vital component for the future of the PIF project.
Luke Edwards also tweeted - “As I’ve said many times people will want to sign Isak, there will be lots of talk of Isak joining this club or that club, but all I will add to those who wish to try is ‘good luck with that…’ it will take an offer of more than £150m to even start a conversation with #NUFC.”
The Swedish forward has three years remaining on his deal, is happy on Tyneside by all accounts, and is a huge part of our plans as we look to compete with the established elite - besides all that, who can actually afford him?!
