Newcastle battling to pull off exciting Xavi Simons signing? - Big claims from Germany
According to reports in Germany, Newcastle United are in the mix for what would be an exciting marquee arrival at St James' Park this summer.
This week's edition of Sport Bild claims that Newcastle are one of four Premier League clubs battling to sign Xavi Simons.
The Dutch international is currently with Bundesliga side RB Leipzig, where he bagged 11 goals and eight assists in 33 appearances in all competitions last season.
They report that Newcastle, Tottenham, Manchester United and Arsenal are all interested in the 22-year-old, stating that his brother, Faustino, has been discussing a move with potential suitors, although it's not clear who he has been speaking to.
Bild state that Leipzig are holding out for €70m (£60m), although this is thought to be an ambitious asking price now he's entered the final two years of his deal, suggesting there could be some scope to bring that fee down.
Simons is typically an attacking midfielder who can play down both flanks, although he is more known from playing down the left and cutting in on his right foot.
Time will tell if Newcastle really are interested, as there is always a chance that an overseas outlet is using the name of Premier League club to drum up interest, especially with Barcelona also linked.
This isn't the first time we've been linked with the Netherlands star, however, with Fabrizio Romano reporting on our interest in the attacker back in July 2024.
RB Leipzig finished seventh last season, seeing them miss out on major European football ahead of the 2025/26 campaign, which may be a big factor behind their need to sell and Simons' wish to leave.
