"Should be completed" - The player Newcastle are 'closest' to signing after £120m triple bid

There has been no official breakthrough on Tyneside this week, but it does feel like we're edging closer to our first major signing of 2025.

The last 24 hours has brought news of three bids, albeit unsuccessful ones for Joao Pedro of Brighton (£50m), Nottingham Forest's Anthony Elanga (£45m) and James Trafford.

Our rejected offer for the Burnley stopper was thought to come in at £25m plus add-ons, although it seems those close to the deal are more and more confident the England stopper will be signing at St James' Park this summer.

Discussing which of our key targets is currently 'closest' to securing a move, The iPaper's Mark Douglas picked out Trafford and explained why there is growing optimism that it may be a matter of time until he signs:

'There is still work to do on a deal for Trafford, but all parties seem to agree that the move should be completed', Douglas reported.
'Trafford is keen, Newcastle believe he is the likely successor to Jordan Pickford as England goalkeeper and Burnley have already signed a replacement.'
Another significant update on Trafford came yesterday, where Fabrizio Romano revealed that the 22-year-old has already 'fully agreed' personal terms with Newcastle.
With suggestions that Burnley want at least £30m for the goalkeeper, hopefully a compromise is in sight, whether that involves Newcastle upping our initial payment slightly or including additional add-ons that may be paid in the future.
