£44m signing set for Newcastle debut vs Liverpool due to Premier cut-off?

It's been a rollercoaster week for the Newcastle United recruitment team, as we frantically prepare for the upcoming Premier League campaign.

Questions are still being asked as to who will start up top for us on the opening weekend against Aston Villa - it will almost certainly be Anthony Gordon - but things are looking up with regards to incomings.

There's still plenty of work still to be done, but after Malick Thiaw joined Anthony Elanga and Aaron Ramsdale through the door on Tuesday, we've had news today that Jacob Ramsey is now en route to Tyneside to undergo a medical.

However, time is ticking and an update has emerged on medical plans and the likelihood of Ramsey making his debut this weekend.

Toon in race against time

It looks like Jacob Ramsey's first appearance for Newcastle United is unlikely to come at Villa Park this weekend.

With David Ornstein now reporting that an overall package worth £44m has been agreed (£39m + £5m in add-ons), the 24-year-old is on his way to Tyneside and set to complete his medical across Thursday night and Friday morning.

However, as Craig Hope reports, it's deemed 'very unlikely' that Ramsey is able to complete all of the formalities ahead of Friday's 12pm deadline.

Premier League's rules dictate that clubs must register new signings by this time to make them eligible to play, meaning Ramsey is highly likely to make his debut in our first home game of the season; a clash with Liverpool under the lights on Monday 25th August!

As for other signings, however, Malick Thiaw has trained with the squad on Wednesday and Thursday, while new arrivals Anthony Elanga and Aarom Ramsdale are also ready to feature, if called upon.
