Official injury update on 3 Newcastle stars ahead of Marseille trip

It was a brilliant Saturday night at St James' Park, where two goals from Harvey Barnes and a superb team performance saw Eddie Howe finally get that first Premier League win over Pep Guardiola's Man City.

Both Kieran Trippier and Anthony Gordon were absent from thee squad, alongside the suspended Dan Burn. We already knew that Gordon was suffering from a hip injury, but Trippier is the latest concern as he missed out with a hamstring complaint.

Speaking ahead of our Champions League trip to Marseille, Howe hints that Gordon is "very close" to being back and should return for our game in France, although he sounded less certain on Trippier's availability:

“Anthony (Gordon) is very close (to being back). He was just not quite ready today. He is working hard, and he will be ready in the next few days.

"Kieran (Trippier), I'm not sure (if he will make it). I am awaiting feedback from the medical team.”

Lewis Hall, back from his own hamstring injury, was taken off as a precautionary measure late in the second half, with Howe suggesting that this was just cramp and nothing to worry about:

“I think so, yeah. I've not had a detailed debrief with the medical team but I think the cramp is what I led to believe it is.”

On the subject of left-back options, Dan Burn will be back from suspension and is likely to come back into the side at Marseille, with Hall needed at Everton next weekend and unlikely to start three games in a week so soon after returning from a hamstring injury.

Gordon's return will give Howe a big call to make, as he's been prolific in Europe but doesn't deserve to nudge Barnes out of the side after his brace last night.
