Newcastle's response to claims Bruno Guimaraes is in talks to join Man Utd

The last thing Newcastle United fans needed this morning after such a harrowing Champions League defeat was to see headlines linking their most influential player with a summer exit.

Unfortunately, those of us waking up with the post-Barca blues were greeted with exactly that as Reuters claimed that Bruno Guimaraes is now in 'advanced talks' with Manchester United over a £69 million summer switch.

Speculation around the future of Newcastle's stars is nothing new. We've weathered these storms many times before, but we're all a bit more wary these days after last year's drama.

Almost a year on from the birth of that painful Alexander Isak saga, the exit rumours continue, but two North East reporters have eased early fears around the Buno to Man Utd link.

Bruno to Man Utd? That's news to Newcastle

The Bruno to Man United story is everywhere today, but thankfully, we have journalists like The iPaper's Mark Douglas and The Telegraph's Luke Edwards who've shed some light from Newcastle United's end.

Douglas took to X this morning to calm the nerves of Newcastle fans who may be reaching for that big red panic button, insisting that Newcastle have responded with total bemusement to the Bruno links.

According to Edwards' sources at Newcastle, the club insist no talks have taken place, 'let alone advanced ones', writing on X that 'nobody at Newcastle has heard anything about this.'

He accepts that Man Utd may hold some level of interest, but the unofficial line from his contacts at Newcastle insist 'nothing is going on' regarding a potential move to Manchester for Bruno.

£69 million? Are we having a sale?

As both reporters pointed out in their posts, this will not be the end of it. Regardless of what levels of truth today's claims hold, it's not going to be the last story we see suggesting that a so-called 'bigger' club is coming for our star players.

We were already sceptical reading this report when we saw the fee. £69 million seems a bit low, doesn't it? Granted, Bruno is 28 now, but Newcastle were conned into paying £55 million for Yoane Wissa days before he turned 29, and he's nowhere near the level of Bruno.

A player's price is set by what he's worth to the selling club, and we just don't see Newcastle settling for £69 million for one of their most important players.

We're choosing to believe Douglas and Edwards on this one without a whiff of doubt. As we said in previous articles, if Bruno does ever leave Newcastle, we think it'll be to an overseas giant in Spain, not a Premier League rival.
