Newcastle United have officially announced the signing of Ecuadorian wonderkid Johan Martinez.
The Magpies have been scouring South America on the hunt for young talent for the academy, and they struck gold recently when they happened upon Independiente del Valle's Johan Martinez.
Martinez is still only 16, and because of this, he won't be able to join his new club until he turns 18 in the summer of 2028. He will remain with Independiente until then.
Ross Wilson spoke about the acquisition of the youngster, saying that Newcastle beat off 'serious competition' to sign the winger.

Having a look at his compilations on YouTube, it's easy to see why Newcastle were so keen to land the starlet ahead of anyone else.

The ball sticks to him like glue, and he's able to manipulate it to do whatever he wants. So many clips show Martinez bringing the ball under control and baffling defenders with his quick feet.
He also has a rocket of a shot on him for a 16-year-old. We're already excited to see what he's going to develop into over the next couple of years.

Once he bulks up a bit so he's got the strength to compete in the English game, and probably has a loan somewhere in Europe after he arrives, he could become a massive player for the club.
We'd be surprised if the plan is to throw him straight into the first team when he arrives in 2028, so we have to make sure that we get his development right, whether that's using him in the Under 21s or sending him out for first-team experience.
Newcastle have fumbled this part before, so we've got everything crossed we don't do it again, because the early indications are that we have a player with limitless potential on our hands.
