Alan Shearer warns Matthias Jaissle over Newcastle backlash - but insists there's "no panic"
Alan Shearer has warned Matthias Jaissle that Newcastle supporters will turn on him unless they see a much better performance against Aston Villa tomorrow.
Our record goalscorer wants an immediate response to Monday's 4-1 defeat at Coventry, but has also urged perspective on Newcastle's start to the season.
Shearer warns Jaissle ahead of Villa
We covered Shearer's Coventry prediction last weekend, when he warned that Frank Lampard's side could cause problems and backed a draw. The eventual defeat was Newcastle's second successive 4-1 loss away from home, following the same scoreline at Leeds.
Writing in his latest Betfair column, Shearer said:
"Newcastle were really poor on Monday evening against Coventry. I expected it to be a yo-yo season, but you can't have too many of those defeats, especially after the Leeds game, and that's two now.
"I will be at St James' Park on Saturday. Aston Villa had a great result in the Champions League, scoring six so that's going to be a really, really tough game.
"Newcastle have got to bounce back. You need a game straight away and they've got it on Saturday. It's not acceptable to lose the way they did at Coventry. They won't get away with that at home with 52,000 fans there.
"Matthias Jaissle will feel the anger of the fans unless they see a massive improvement. He needs a result massively. You can overreact sometimes because if Newcastle had gone to Coventry and won, they'd have been fourth. Newcastle are where I thought they'd be at this stage of the season, so there's no panic."
We responded to the Leeds defeat by beating Hull. Hopefully we can do the same on Saturday and give the crowd something to get behind.
