Alex Murphy set for Kaiserslautern move as Newcastle youngster heads to Germany

Alex Murphy is on his way out on loan, and he's swapping the North East for the 2.Bundesliga.

According to the Daily Mail's Craig Hope, the 21-year-old is on the verge of a season-long move to Kaiserslautern, and is already having his medical ahead of the switch.

The Republic of Ireland U21 international has been crying out for regular senior minutes for a while now, so a full campaign in Germany's second tier looks like exactly what he needs.

This move also explains his absence from the recent Valencia game. He managed just six appearances for the first team in the 25/26 season, playing just one full 90 minutes, and that came in the Champions League.

At 22, Murphy has only played 23 matches of men’s football (not including U21 cup fixtures). 

Why the move makes sense

Alex Murphy has needed a loan for some time. He was kept at the club last summer because of the squad's lack of depth, and denied a loan move in January for the same reason. The club has done him a disservice by keeping him on the bench.

A move to the 2. Bundesliga is a good one for Alex, who can hopefully get some much-needed minutes. Murphy spent the second half of the 2024/25 season with Bolton, playing 13 games for the League One side.

For those who haven't watched much of him, Murphy is a left-sided defender who can fill in at left-back or centre-half, and at 6ft 2in he's got the frame to handle the physical side of German football.

He's tied down at St James' Park until 2028, so there's no panic about losing him. This is just about getting him out playing, letting him build up a run of games, and seeing what we've got when he comes back.

Hopefully a move for the Irishman is a sign Newcastle are closing in on a new full-back, with our left and right-sided options looking particularly light beyond Lewis Hall and Tino Livramento.
