Aston Villa could pip Newcastle to James Trafford signing - Report

Newcastle United continue to be linked with a move for England goalkeeper James Trafford.

For the third consecutive summer, Newcastle are reportedly trying to sign 23-year-old goalkeeper James Trafford.

The Magpies missed out last year after Manchester City activated their buy-back clause for the young stopper, promising plenty of playing time if he returned to the club. Trafford opted to join Pep Guardiola's side, but then they went out and brought in Gianluigi Donnarumma, who took over the No.1 spot.

Trafford was understandably upset with what happened and is thought to be looking for an exit this summer, which has brought Newcastle back to the table.

Newcastle could be beaten by Aston Villa again

The Cockermouth-born star is on international duty with England at the World Cup currently, and is likely to wait until the World Cup is over before making a decision on his future. There will probably need to be talks with City's new manager Enzo Maresca before any final decision is made, too.

Newcastle do have other goalkeepers in mind, with Zion Suzuki being strongly linked lately, but Trafford is thought to be the number one priority.

However, according to The Chronicle, Aston Villa are also sniffing around as Emi Martinez is expected to leave. Given their Champions League status, they could be about to do Newcastle dirty once again after seemingly beating the Magpies to the signing of Johan Manzambi.

Trafford is destined to never play for Newcastle

It is starting to feel like Newcastle and James Trafford are never meant to be a thing. We keep trying and failing.

He would definitely be my personal preference of all the keepers we've been linked with over recent weeks, but Zion Suzuki, Bart Verbruggen and Robin Risser aren't exactly terrible backup options.

As long as we get one of those four, I'll be happy.
