Chris Sutton makes Leeds vs Newcastle prediction after three wrong calls

Chris Sutton is predicting a 1-1 draw between Leeds and Newcastle United on Monday night, having failed to get the result right in any of our opening three Premier League games.

The BBC Sport pundit backed Liverpool and Tottenham to beat us, then switched to a Newcastle win against Bournemouth. Three attempts, three wrong outcomes.

So, welcome to The Sutton Scorecard, where we’ll follow his Newcastle predictions through the season and see how they stand up against the actual results. There’ll be points when he gets it right, too. Assuming that happens.

Sutton expects a draw at Elland Road

In his latest BBC Sport predictions, Sutton has praised Newcastle’s threat on the break and explained why he expects the points to be shared:

“Newcastle are the new counter-attack kings and I am expecting more of the same from them here.

“It will be interesting to see how Leeds boss Daniel Farke tries to deal with that. He has been quite versatile with the way he has set his side up this season.

“Leeds have shown a bit more steel in their league games too, and look well organised, but at the same time I don't know if they carry as much of an attacking threat as they did previously.

“I probably still fancy Leeds more to win this because they are at home, but Newcastle showed plenty of fight against Bournemouth last week and this will probably end up in a draw too.”

Sutton’s prediction: Leeds 1-1 Newcastle.

How did his last three predictions go?

At Tottenham, Sutton went for a 2-1 Spurs win, admitting: “I couldn’t tell you why.”

Anthony Elanga and Yoane Wissa supplied the response, scoring in our 2-0 victory in North London. Wrong result, zero points.

For Bournemouth, he was more optimistic. Impressed by our start under Matthias Jaissle, Sutton backed Newcastle to win 2-1.

Instead, we needed Harvey Barnes and Jacob Ramsey to rescue a 2-2 draw after going two goals down. Another zero.

Add his opening-day prediction of a 3-1 Liverpool win, which finished 2-2, and he starts on 0 points from a possible 15.

To be fair, three games don’t tell us much about a whole season’s forecasting. That’s why we’re keeping count.

And we can hardly dismiss this latest prediction when Olly’s Leeds vs Newcastle preview also goes for 1-1. The unbeaten start is encouraging, but the Bournemouth performance gave us enough reason to approach Elland Road cautiously.
