Chris Sutton predicts more Everton misery for Newcastle at St James' Park

Chris Sutton is backing Everton to beat Newcastle 2-1 at St James' Park on Monday night, warning that our open approach will give David Moyes's side chances to take all three points.

The BBC pundit is predicting another defeat against the Toffees after our 3-1 Carabao Cup exit on Thursday. His own record remains fairly miserable, though, with just one correct Newcastle result from eight league predictions this season.

Sutton backs Everton to punish Newcastle

Writing in his latest BBC Sport predictions, Sutton says:

"Everton's age-old problem is how Thierno Barry is going to perform because they rely so heavily on how well he is playing up front.

"To be fair to David Moyes's side, they carried more of a threat than I expected in their defeat by Arsenal and I can see them getting chances here, because Newcastle are so open.

"The Magpies will absolutely go for it again here and I have a sneaky feeling they will leave the door ajar for Everton to pinch the points."

Sutton's prediction: Newcastle 1-2 Everton.

Barry was among Everton's scorers on Thursday, so the threat he identifies is hardly an abstract one. We have already given this opposition far too much encouragement once this week.

The Sutton Scorecard 2026/27

Sutton's 2-2 prediction at Crystal Palace last weekend brought no points, with Newcastle instead winning 2-0 at Selhurst Park.

That leaves him on two points from eight completed predictions. An exact score earns five points, a correct result with the wrong score earns two, and a wrong result earns zero.

The clean sheet at Palace offered something to build on, which made Thursday's defending all the more frustrating. With Everton coming to Tyneside so soon afterwards, we need to make them work considerably harder for their chances.
