Dan Burn suffers ankle injury in training ahead of Newcastle vs Liverpool

It's matchday on Tyneside, where Newcastle United take on Liverpool in the first competitive game of the Matthias Jaissle era and the opening match of our 2026/27 Premier League season.

There's a feeling of anxiety, hope and emotion in the air as we build up to kick-off, but there is some bad news to share ahead of the game.

Before a ball has even been kicked, news has emerged that Dan Burn is facing a spell on the sidelines, handing an early blow to Jaissle and the squad.

Burn suffers ankle injury

Dan Burn has been ruled out of today's opening day clash with Liverpool after suffering an ankle injury.

It's believed the newly appointed club captain rolled his ankle in training this week, and faces a period of weeks on the sidelines, according to Craig Hope.

Burn is in a protective boot to limit movement, but the issue is not thought to be serious and will not require surgery.

However, at a time when leaders have been lost and his experience could be key to lif this young group, it's an unwanted blow and may leave the club considering their options over the final week of the transfer window.

Botman must step up

He's had a poor pre-season, featuring an own goal, some indecision and a few too many mistakes, but Sven Botman has to step up today.

The Dutchman was close to Alexander Isak during his time on Tyneside, although there'll be no room for respect and friendship when he enters the field today.

Elsewhere, we're backing new signings Lukas Hornicek, Amar Dedic and Sean Steur to all start, with Bazoumana Toure a strong contender to come straight in down the left, unless Jaissle opts for Harvey Barnes' experience.

Up top, we can't see past Yoane Wissa starting in a second striker role just behind Will Osula, who scored in last Sunday's 1-1 draw with Strasbourg
