Eddie Howe set to be replaced by Matthias Jaissle as Newcastle United manager

Some breaking news to share on Thursday morning as Eddie Howe has left his role at Newcastle United.

After almost five years at the helm, it's emerged in the last few moments that the 48-year-old has stepped down from his position.

The Athletic's David Ornstein reports that, despite all parties initially agreeing to continue heading into the coming season after a difficult 2025/26, Howe has now informed Newcastle of his decision to step down and take a break.

It's a bombshell decision following last night's 4-1 defeat to Bristol City, leaving Newcastle on the search for a new manager with just three weeks left until the 2026/27 season kicks off.

Jaissle in talks to land Toon job 

No sooner have we heard the sudden news on Howe, both Ornstein and Fabrizio Romano reports that Matthias Jaissle has been lined up to fill the hot seat.

The German manager, formerly of RB Salzburg, is the current head coach at Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal, and is thought to be the 'top candidate' for the job.

It's thought he is in advanced talks over the position, with the deal said to be 'close' as Newcastle line up Howe's successor.
