Ewen Jaouen signs! - Newcastle United confirm signing of Reims goalkeeper
Newcastle United have confirmed the signing of 20-year-old French U21 international from Stade de Reims.
Originally expected to cost Newcastle around £24 million, the actual figure is now believed to be closer to £18 million plus add-ons.
The highly-rated goalkeeper was touted as a future France No. 1 when he was just 18 and has starred in Ligue 2 for Reims of late.
Many clubs were keen on Jaouen, but the Frenchman opted for the move to Tyneside.
The club dropped a teaser video just before midday via X with Ewen Jaouen speaking about the passion in and around the club.
Jaouen is impressed with the passion at the club
Speaking to the club's official website, the 6'6" stopper said he's very excited about the move and was impressed with how passionate everyone at the club was.
“I’m really excited to become a Newcastle United player.
“When I visited the training ground, I could see how passionate everyone is about the club and the work they do, and I loved the environment straight away. I also had the chance to see the stadium and it’s huge.
“I’ve heard so much about the supporters and how they are the best in the country. The passion of the entire city and the atmosphere at St James’ Park are famous throughout football, and I can’t wait to experience that for myself and become a true Geordie.
“As a goalkeeper, I enjoy one on one situations and playing as a modern keeper, building from the back and being comfortable with the ball at my feet. Now I want to develop alongside the amazing players and staff here, enjoy my football, and prove my value on the pitch.”
We are liking the quick start to the summer
This feels like a very good start to the summer by Ross Wilson; let's just hope he can keep up the momentum and get a few more over the line as quickly.
There are plenty of other positions that we need to recruit for, but getting Anthony Gordon shipped out and bringing Jaouen in before the window has officially opened is an excellent start to the summer's business.
We expect that Ewen Joauen will not be the only goalkeeper to come in this summer, either, as it feels like Nick Pope could be on the way out with a new No.1 in place before the season gets underway. Joauen is likely to be seen as the backup option.
