Fabian Schar contract update as Eddie Howe drops Newcastle hint
Newcastle United have several players set to leave the club at the end of the season, with contracts expiring and not being renewed.
Defensive stalwart and Eddie Howe favourite Fabian Schar looked to be heading for the exit as one of those with an expiring contract.
Given his age and Ross Wilson's remit to reduce the average age of the squad, it always felt like Schar's time at Newcastle could be coming to an end, although it wouldn't be the preference of Schar or Howe.
Fabian Schar has outlined his desire to end his career as a Newcastle player, while Eddie Howe has made no secret of his admiration for Schar, but ultimately, it's Ross Wilson who makes the final decision.
Eddie Howe confirms talks with Fabian Schar
Speaking to the media on Friday morning, Howe was asked if there was any update on Schar, and he confirmed that talks have taken place.
Keith Downie has gone as far as saying that a contract has been offered with reduced terms. Howe just said there had been discussions, and it's now with Ross Wilson and Schar's people.
“I've had a few discussions with Fabby. It is now with Ross and his agent and we hope to come to a successful conclusion."
“We want Fabian to stay. We feel he has a lot to offer. He’s been unbelievable for us.”
We're happy with Fabian Schar staying
We absolutely back the club offering Fabian Schar a new deal. He's been very unlucky this season with injuries, so he hasn't played as often as he'd have liked, but when he has played, we've looked better with him in the side.
It sounds like he's going to have to make do with a reduced role at the club, perhaps more of a backup player than a regular starter, but he should expect that with Malick Thiaw doing so well in his absence.
Schar offers us something different as a ball-playing defender with a fantastic range of passing, and of course, his tendency to score worldies. We hope he gets his wish to end his career at Newcastle.
