‘Furious’ Matthias Jaissle reacts to Newcastle collapse at Coventry

Matthias Jaissle cut a furious figure after Newcastle United suffered a humiliating 4-1 defeat away to Coventry City on Monday night.

Newcastle conceded four goals for the second time in their last two league away games, leaving Jaissle with plenty to address after we looked weak at the back, unbalanced in midfield and lacking in quality up top against a poor Coventry side.

Jaissle apologises to fans after another ugly away day

Jaissle did not hide his disappointment after the final whistle, apologising to the Newcastle supporters who made the journey to Coventry and highlighting the shortcomings at both ends of the pitch.

The Shields Gazette’s Charlie Bennett took to X after the match, describing the Newcastle head coach as a “very despondent” and “furious” figure in the press room

“We can only apologise to the fans that took the journey. We need to analysis it clearly, especially in the box, at both ends.

“The desire and hunger to score, to finish the attacks, that was missing. We conceded the goals too easily and didn’t finish our chances.”

Despite the heavy defeat, Jaissle insisted he was not concerned by Newcastle suffering successive 4-1 away losses, pointing to improvements he believes he has seen in his side. Asked whether the results worried him, he replied:

“No, because you need to see the overall picture. There were elements where we really improved.”

Positives aside, which I am struggling to take, the result was another painful setback. Just as we’d been hoping to build momentum after that 2-1 win over Hull City before the international break, knowing a win would’ve taken us up to fourth, we produced that.

Jaissle’s Sky Sports interview

Jaissle was also interviewed by Sky Sports following the defeat, with the Newcastle boss facing questions after another miserable Monday Night Football.

Coventry took the lead through Jack Rudoni’s early penalty before Sidiki Cherif doubled their advantage shortly after half-time. Sven Botman briefly gave us hope with a thunderous long-range strike, but late goals from Ellis Simms and Stephen Mfuni rounded off a miserable night at both ends for Newcastle.

Jaissle acknowledged that we had controlled periods of the match and felt we should’ve won, but stressed that this counted for little when his side were so ineffective in both boxes. Watch it below.

The German now faces an important response from his players, with Saturday’s home clash with Aston Villa feeling vital. He must adapt and the players must step up, as last night’s defeat was simply unacceptable.
