Gonçalo Ramos expected to leave PSG this summer after Newcastle links - Fabrizio Romano
Newcastle United were keen on signing Gonçalo Ramos from Benfica before he joined Paris Saint-Germain.
The Magpies were keen on signing the Portuguese forward a couple of years ago and even got a close-up look at him when Benfica hosted Newcastle in a pre-season friendly in 2022.
Ramos opened the scoring for the Portuguese side in that game as they went on to win 3-2, and he's been linked with a move to Tyneside on several occasions since.
Ultimately, he went to PSG, where he's gone on to make 127 appearances in all competitions, scoring 45 goals and laying on 10 assists.
Gonçalo Ramos set to leave PSG?
Given PSG's stacked squad, the 24-year-old isn't a guaranteed starter, and with that in mind, it's now expected he'd be open to a move in the summer.
Fabrizio Romano took to X on Saturday to report that Ramos is likely to leave the French club in the summer.
"Gonçalo Ramos can leave Paris Saint-Germain in the summer, it’s a serious possibility. Ramos will focus on helping PSG until the very end of another magic season, top professional always appreciated internally.
"In the summer, exit possible with several clubs keen and new movements anticipated for Ramos to be a starter elsewhere."
Will Newcastle try again?
Ramos was touted as a possible target for Newcastle last year as they looked to replace Alexander Isak. There's a need to recruit a striker again this year, so could the Magpies try again?
It will be a very difficult deal to do, though, as he's going to be highly sought-after, and it looks unlikely that Newcastle will have European football to offer, which we expect will be a big deal for a player of his calibre.
We totally understand him turning us down to go to PSG, but the question now is, did we impress him enough in those talks four years ago that he'd be willing to take a chance on us next season?
We're not too convinced, to be honest. It's probably just wishful thinking on our part.
