Jaissle admits Newcastle still feel like they are in pre-season ahead of Palace clash

Matthias Jaissle has admitted Newcastle United still have plenty of work to do to implement his style of football, insisting the club’s decision-makers understand the scale of the task.

We head to Crystal Palace on tomorrow afternoon looking to respond to successive defeats against Coventry City and Aston Villa, with Jaissle hoping a productive week on the training ground can translate into an improved performance at Selhurst Park.

Jaissle makes honest admission about Newcastle progress

The German has faced questions over his tactical approach following two disappointing defeats, which has seen us concede five goals and score just once across our last two Premier League matches.

Jaissle has now acknowledged that his team are still learning the fundamentals of his preferred style, pointing to the limited time he has had to work with the squad since arriving on Tyneside.

“We have for sure a lot of potential still. This is something I mentioned to some of the club’s decision-makers, that sometimes we still feel in pre-season when we train with the group.

“We are still implementing the basics for our way of playing. It takes time. The good part is that everyone within the club is realistic and can see that.”

The comments underline the transitional period Newcastle are going through following a summer of significant change.

However, patience will only stretch so far among supporters, particularly after the manner of the recent defeats, especially on the road after back to back 4-1 defeats.

We have struggled to turn possession and promising openings into clear-cut chances, while defensive vulnerabilities have also become a concern alongside a wide open midfield.

Sunday’s trip to Palace offers Jaissle an opportunity to show that the work being done on the training ground is beginning to produce tangible improvements. And there’ll be no excuses against an out of sorts Palace side who lost 5-0 last weekend and played in Istanbul on Thursday night.

Jaissle targets response against Crystal Palace

The Newcastle boss also reflected on the work completed during the week, suggesting we’ve had a productive few days on the training ground.

“It’s been a week where we have been fully committed, but now it is time to focus on the next match. To show a performance to get a great result. It is the time to make it count on a matchday.

“Crystal Palace have had a heavy defeat and then drew yesterday; they will want a reaction.

“We can only focus on ourselves, what we can control. We are fully focused on Crystal Palace, to deliver the match plan.”

Palace will also be looking to respond after a difficult run of results, making Sunday’s meeting an important opportunity for both sides to get their campaigns back on track.

For Newcastle, the challenge is to turn Jaissle’s ideas into a more consistent and convincing performance. The manager has made clear that the club understands the process will take time, but an improved display and a positive result at Selhurst Park feels essential to ease the pressure on Jaissle and get our season back on track.
