Jaissle explains Aladji Bamba situation and rejects Under-21 proposal
Newcastle United boss Matthias Jaissle has explained why summer signing Aladji Bamba is struggling for first-team minutes, insisting the midfielder is making progress as he adapts to the demands of English football.
The £34m arrival from Monaco has managed just 27 minutes of competitive action so far, with the 20-year-old seemingly well down the midfield pecking order ahead of today’s trip to Crystal Palace.
Jaissle speaks out on Bamba situation
Bamba arrived on Tyneside with plenty of promise, but breaking into Newcastle’s midfield has proved difficult amid fierce competition for places.
Nico Gonzalez, Lewis Miley, Joelinton, Sean Steur, Jacob Ramsey and Joe Willock are all competing for those two central roles in Jaissle’s 4-2-3-1, leaving the Frenchman with a tough route into the side.
The boss has previously stressed the importance of establishing a settled team structure, and he has now offered a further explanation of Bamba’s situation, pointing to the youngster’s adaptation to the physicality of the Premier League.
Jaissle also ruled out suggestions that Bamba could feature in the Under-21s’ Tyne-Wear derby against Sunderland tomorrow night
“First of all, he was also with the national team (France U21s) and that helped. That helps, for sure, the young lads if they are getting minutes. He is progressing. In the midfield, we have such high competition.
“Especially on the spine in the squad or in the starting XI, you are not willing to change a lot. You want to have a structure and give confidence and stabilisation to the team.
“We see progress. He was not aware of the physicality of the Premier League in the beginning, but he is getting there now. That is a good sign because he is working hard in training. We are pleased with him, but for now, U21 minutes are not planned.”
Jaissle’s comments suggest Newcastle remain satisfied with Bamba’s development behind the scenes, even if supporters have seen very little of their expensive summer recruit so far. But at what point does his career stall if game time becomes so limited?
Loan move could be on the cards
With Bamba yet to establish himself in the first team, a January loan move may become an option if his minutes remain limited over the coming months.
At 20, the midfielder is at a stage of his career where regular competitive football feels important to his development, especially when he’d just starting breaking into life at senior level with Monaco last season. Training alongside Newcastle’s senior players will help him adjust to the club’s demands, but there is only so much progress he can make without meaningful time on the pitch.
A loan could offer Bamba the opportunity to build match fitness, gain experience and develop the physical attributes Jaissle believes he needs to thrive in English football
For now though, Jaissle has made his position clear; Bamba is progressing, the club seem to be pleased with his work in training, and Under-21 football is not part of the plan.
The key question is whether that patience will eventually lead to more first-team opportunities. If he continues to find himself on the fringes of the senior squad, we may need to reassess how best to help our £34m recruit fulfil his potential.
