Jaissle: What Newcastle must do against Hull to learn from Leeds mistakes

Matthias Jaissle has demanded a more aggressive and physical Newcastle United side when they return to Premier League action against Hull City.

The Toon boss has called for his players to learn from Monday’s 4-1 defeat at Leeds, focusing specifically on how we must improve off the ball. 

Jaissle demands more aggression

Jaissle has identified Newcastle’s lack of intensity in duels and second balls as key areas that must improve against Hull.

Asked what his side can do to respond, the German gave a telling reply to the media: 

“Learning from our mistakes we did, learning from the dual behaviors we missed in the Leeds match.

“And if you continue the progress like that, if you’re tougher in those duels, if you’re more aggressive, if you’re more sharp and hungry to collect the second balls, then it will be automatically a huge step already.

“Because that means that you’re more dominant, means that you have more possession. And then that leads also to the fact that you threaten the opposition much more. 

“So that will be the elements where we will focus on and there will be a reaction.”

A reaction is needed 

The Leeds defeat was particularly concerning, because we were simply second best in so many physical battles, with Jaissle’s side unable to match the intensity of their opponents.

That cannot happen again against Hull, who will be up for this and eager to maintain their unbeaten start. 

The Tigers will provide another physical test, meaning Newcastle have to respond from the first whistle against a Hull side with plenty of physicality and fight in their ranks. 

Jaissle has already made it clear what he wants to see: more aggression, sharper reactions and a greater hunger to win those crucial second balls.
