Messy Mags fight back to maintain unbeaten start - Newcastle 2-2 Bournemouth
Newcastle fought back from 2-0 down to take a point against bogey team Bournemouth in the early kick-off at St James' Park, maintaining our unbeaten start to the 2026/27 season.
Much of the game was a struggle. Our passing was poor, our pressing was below par, we looked wide open defensively at times, and we didn't create much against a Bournemouth side who looked that bit sharper both on and off the ball.
However, we kept fighting. Our spirit remained, we hung on in there and found moments of quality where it mattered. A Harvey Barnes stunner reduced the deficit before the break and yet another Jaissle super-sub did the damage late on, as Jacob Ramsey's 88th-minute strike settled another high-scoring affair at St James' Park.
Toon outplayed in poor first half
Jaissle named an unchanged side, rewarding the 11 who beat Spurs 2-0 last Saturday. A first home start for Nico Gonzalez, £51m new boy Matias Fernandez-Pardo on the bench and two Mags back in the squad in Tino Livramento and Nick Pope, who was selected following a minor injury to Ewen Jaouen.

Bournemouth made a bright start and were comfortably the better side for much of a frustrating first half. They out-pressed, were quicker to loose balls, and our passing was way off, highlighted by some uncharacteristic sloppiness from Lewis Miley, several Sven Botman giveaways and an overall struggle to look after the ball in our own half or get anywhere near their goal as a result.
25 minutes in, the only Newcastle player to touch the ball in Bournemouth’s box was Amar Dedic, which told a story in itself as we struggled to get bodies close to or beyond an isolated Yoane Wissa.
Marcus Tavernier’s ninth-minute opener had been coming, and Evanilson should’ve made it 2-0 moments later, then a deserved second came through a Malick Thiaw own goal after a Dedic giveaway and a missed tackle from Gonzalez allowed Bournemouth to break away.
Punishment for such a slack first 35 minutes, leaving St James' Park stunned, although hope was restored before the break as Harvey Barnes curled into the top corner barely a minute after the restart. The first moment of quality from a usually flat front four, and boy did we need it!
Heading into the second half, we had work to do both on and off the ball. Barnes' goal gave us a lifeline, but we were heading for our first defeat of 2026/27 if the patterns of play in the first 45 continued.
We had to up our intensity, push further up the pitch and vastly improve a passing game that was not only stifling so many attacks, but also gifting Bournemouth the opportunity to start breaks of their own.
Better, but not enough
We came out on the front foot and so nearly levelled things up, as a brilliant run and cross from Wissa ended with a Joe Willock header that glanced just inches wide of Petrovic's post.
With 60 minutes on the clock, Jaissle sent Fernandez-Pardo out to warm up, bringing on our new No.20 alongside Jacob Ramsey to replace an unusually poor Miley and tiring Willock. The Belgian got a warm Geordie welcome, and his first act saw a slick first touch and turn get Justin Kluivert in the book.
Bournemouth's intensity had dropped, but we hadn't taken advantage heading into the final 15 minutes. Despite our marginal improvement, Petrovic wasn't forced to make a save at a Gallowgate End Bournemouth got at with ease in the opening 45.
More changes followed from Jaissle, who sent on Jacob Murphy and Sean Steur on 77 minutes, seeing a disappointing Elanga and Gonzalez come off. After being so influential in our win at Spurs last weekend, the pair failed to make their mark on this one, with Alex Scott running the show in midfield and Adrien Truffert superb at left-back.
We needed a moment of quality against a Bournemouth side who'd shipped stoppage-time goals in each of their opening two games, and we found it. After Barnes' shot was blocked from Thiaw's knock-down, Ramsey arrived with a controlled finish to make it 2-2, maintaining our unbeaten start to 2026/27.
Next up, Millwall away in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday before a Premier League trip to Leeds a week on Monday.
