Newcastle release update on new crest as next steps are outlined

Newcastle United announced they were looking to change the current club crest last year and began consultation with fans to kickstart the process.

The club made it clear that they would not be drastically changing the design; rather, they were looking to evolve the current badge. A leaked design shortly after this announcement had fans recoiling in horror, but the club is pressing on with the change.

The existing club crest has been in use since 1988, and while it is iconic, the club has outlined a list of issues the current badge poses in the modern day.

According to the club, the badge doesn't scale well digitally and provides a lot of issues when being recreated.

In a lengthy post on the website, the club gives the following reasons why they feel a change is needed.

"Its complexity affects how we show up. Its intricacies and irregularities make consistent, high-quality reproduction impossible – from modern digital platforms, to broadcast environments and merchandise."

A video explaining the need for change and the process the club is undergoing was posted on the official website on Monday, and it hints at what the new design may look like.

As is often the case, there was initially plenty of resistance to change, but those who took the time to respond to the club's survey on the crest seemingly agreed with the need for an update, although they also made it very clear that they were just looking for evolution and not revolution, and insisted that a circular badge is an instant no.

So many clubs have changed their crest in the modern day, producing simple, toned-down versions of their old badges while others have opted for a circular badge with a logo in the middle.

Newcastle fans still want to stand out from the crowd, and it looks as though the club agrees with that philosophy and wants to maintain the elements that make our badge iconic. The seahorses, the castle turret, the shield and the ribbon.

Select fans will be able to vote in a poll in early August to vote for their preferred option: Eligible Supporters will consist of Men’s and Women’s Season ticket holders, Mags and Mags+ members as of 18 July 2026 and anyone who purchased tickets for two or more women’s matches during the 25/26 season at Gateshead International Stadium.
