WATCH: Sean Steur spotted leaving Newcastle's training ground as £23m move nears completion
Newcastle United are wrapping up their surprise £23 million signing of Ajax midfielder Sean Steur.
The news that Newcastle had agreed a deal with Eredivisie giants Ajax over their 18-year-old midfielder Sean Steur caught everyone by surprise on Tuesday.
Not only did Newcastle's interest in the young star seemingly come out of nowhere, but it also moved at a frantic pace. Within 24 hours of Newcastle's interest being made public, the teenager was in Newcastle awaiting his medical.
The first part of his medical took place on Wednesday at Newcastle's Benton training ground, where he was spotted by Sky Sports' cameras entering a car before heading off for the next part of his whirlwind day.
Steur spotted - but is he Sandro Tonali's replacement?
Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie reported on Steur's arrival, confirming the news that the deal is worth £20 million up front with a further £3 million in add-ons.
Downie also confirmed that Steur isn't the immediate replacement for Sandro Tonali, who joined Tottenham Hotspur for £100 million.
"A midfielder, versatile, good with the ball, a good passer. I don't think the idea is for him to go straight into the starting eleven.
“I don't think he's a replacement for Sandro Tonali, so to speak, but he'll be given time, and Eddie Howe will be the task of improving him on the training ground, as he has done with many of his other signings."
Expect the announcement on Thursday
Downie would go on to say that he expects that Newcastle will announce Steur's signing within the next 24 hours.
There doesn't seem to be anything holding this one up, though, so we expect we'll get more information today when it's hopefully announced officially.
It'll be a nice distraction from Bruno Guimarães at least.
