WATCH: Yoane Wissa scores alongside former Mag in 2-0 win for DR Congo

Yoane Wissa was back on the scoresheet for DR Congo on Thursday night, helping his country make a winning start to their Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.

The Newcastle United forward found the net in a 2-0 victory over Equatorial Guinea, with former Magpies defender Chancel Mbemba also getting on the scoresheet.

Wissa and Mbemba score in DR Congo win 

Mbemba opened the scoring after just four minutes, putting DR Congo in front before Wissa added the second in the 72nd minute.

It was another goal for the Newcastle forward following his impressive start to 2026/27, where he’s finally started to look more like the 20-goal striker we signed from Brentford last summer.

The 2-0 victory gives DR Congo a perfect start to their AFCON qualifying campaign, with Wissa playing his part once again after a strong World Cup. 

Wissa continuing excellent start to the season 

Wissa has looked like a new man in recent months, having also impressed on the international stage at the 2026 World Cup.

After netting three times in four World Cup games, he provided an assist in our opening day draw with Liverpool, before scoring our second to secure a 2-0 win away to Tottenham.

Under Matthias Jaissle, Wissa has also been used in a slightly deeper role, operating as the second striker in the German’s 4-2-3-1 system.

Next up for Wissa is an AFCON qualifier against Zimbabwe, followed by friendlies with Uganda in early October.
