Painful clip emerges as ex-referee explains why VAR denied NUFC clear penalty at Man Utd

by Andrew Reynolds · 18 October 2022, 07:25

Speaking on Sky Sports, former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher has attempted to explain why Callum Wilson was NOT given a penalty in his clash with Raphael Varane during a baffling debate with Danny Mills.

In the game, Varane cut across Wilson, missing the ball completely and causing our number nine to fall to the ground, but referee Craig Pawson and VAR deemed it not enough of a foul to give a penalty.

On Sky, the ex-ref revealed he believed it 'was a foul' but added that the 'tolerance level' from VAR is different to that of the referee - somehow making the decision even more confusing.

Former Leeds man Danny Mills was in disbelief at the decision and in Gallagher's explanation as to why it was not given, causing further debate as to whether VAR is really improving the game.

If there was more consistency in the way referees enforced these rules, fans may understand the decisions more, but week in week out fouls just like that on Wilson are given as penalties.
