Southgate snubs Gordon (again) as Premier League trio receive late call-ups instead

by Olly Hawkins ·

Earlier today, it was confirmed that Callum Wilson, James Maddison and Lewis Dunk had all been forced to withdraw from the latest England squad due to injuries.

That left two attacking slots open to Gareth Southgate. After missing out on the initial squad last week, surely this created room for Anthony Gordon's first call-up to the senior side? Think again.

Instead, Southgate has handed debut call-ups to Chelsea's Cole Palmer and Man City's Rico Lewis, with Aston Villa's Ezri Konsa also selected in Dunk's absence.

It's probably a huge relief for Eddie Howe, but that's not the point. We could not afford another injury, especially not one to our most in-form and versatile attacker, However, you have to feel for Gordon, who has been involved in eight Premier League goals so far this season.

Palmer is a real talent, yet all four of his league goals have come from the spot, while Lewis has started just two of Man City's 11 Premier League games so far. Yet another baffling call from the England boss...
