Germany release Nick Woltemade update as doubts emerge on Newcastle striker

Nick Woltemade has had a brilliant but chaotic few months to put it mildly.

After swapping Stuttgart for St James' Park following a £69m move, he has been thrown into Eddie Howe's starting 11 due to Yoane Wissa's injury, scored four goals in five starts and is now due back on international duty with Germany.

The Germans have two crucial World Cup qualifiers to come Luxembourg and Northern Ireland, but there are now doubts surrounding the big man's availability.

In a Monday afternoon update from the German national team, they have revealed that the 23-year-old will not travel to their training camp today due to illness:

A brief statement from DFB's official account on X reads: 'Nick Woltemade will not travel for the time being due to a flu-like infection.'

It is therefore unclear if Woltemade will make Friday's game against Luxembourg following his illness, with updates around his condition one to watch in the coming days, with a trip to Northern Ireland set to follow a week today.

If unwell and unable to travel today, it highlights what an impressive display it was from the big man yesterday, as Woltemade played 92 minutes, scored again, linked the play superbly and gave as good as he got in a physical battle with Forest's centre-backs.

Perhaps his symptoms have only presented themselves this morning, but it may not be the worst news for Newcastle if he rests and recovers over the break, with Wissa sidelined until early November following an injury setback.
