Big claims on Fabian Schar from Sky Germany ahead of January transfer window

There’s no denying that Fabian Schar has earned himself cult hero status at Newcastle United, and will go down as one of the most criminally underrated players of the modern era.

The Swiss international has popped up with big goals and equally big defensive performances over the course of the last seven years.

But after some recent concussion and fitness issues, coupled with the fact he’s one of the oldest players in the entire squad, and it looks like Schar’s stint on Tyneside could be coming to an end very soon.

Though just how and where Schar will end on his club career remains a mystery. The player has been open to an extension on his current deal, but a fresh report could see him return to his old stomping grounds in Europe…

Bundesliga interest and new deal 'unlikely' ?

According to Sky Germany's Florian Plettenberg, Fabian Schar could leave Newcastle United in January, with Bundesliga clubs showing interest as he approaches the final six months of his contract.

Writing on X, Plettenberg stated “A winter move for Fabian Schär is possible, potentially to the Bundesliga as well. Enquiries have already been made for the 33 y/o experienced centre-back from Newcastle.”

Schar last played in the Bundesliga a decade ago for Hoffenheim, where he managed one goal in 32 appearances for the German club before moving to Deportivo La Coruna in Spain.

He also claims that Schar is 'currently unlikely' to extend his deal on Tyneside, which expires next summer. However, this seems a surprising stance when you consider what the man himself said on his future just a few weeks ago...

Man himself seems happy to stay!?

Schar has indeed fallen down the pecking order, with Malick Thiaw and Sven Botman being the starting options for Eddie Howe right now, and Dan Burn also a popular choice.

But being a rotation option or squad player doesn’t look to have affected Schar’s morale, as he seems rather content with the prospect of seeing out the rest of his career in black and white stripes.

Speaking last month, Schar commented on the prospect of him getting a contract extension and subsequently retiring on Tyneside, saying: “I have said before I feel at home here. I know in football you never know what happens and it goes quick.

“If that’s something that can happen, that would be good. I would be open to it of course. Retirement at Newcastle United would be great. Everything’s just right here, on and off the pitch.

"When I (last) extended my contract, I could hardly imagine taking on a new challenge at another club. I’m a player who appreciates what I have.”
