Bizarre double boost for Newcastle as player sees red & rivals blow it on Monday night

It was a bizarre Monday night at Old Trafford, and it might just hand Newcastle United a double boost in the Premier League.

Man Utd hosted Everton (our opponents on Saturday), knowing a win would move them to joint 4th, up to 21 points and six clear of Newcastle after three wins and two draws in their previous five games.

Not only did the Red Devils blow that chance, losing 1-0 thanks to Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall's first-half strike, they lost despite playing against the Toffees' 10 men for over 80 minutes.

Everton's Idrissa Gueye was sent off in the 13th minute for a Bowyer-Dyer incident, striking teammate Michael Keane in the face in a moment of madness that will now see him serve a three-game ban.

Gueye ha started every game for David Moyes' side this season, but will now be suspended for Newcastle's trip to Merseyside on Saturday, meaning one of Tim Iroegbunam or Carlos Alcaraz will have to step in this weekend.

The rare win in Manchester and superb Everton display will send them into Saturday on a high, albeit without their tough tackling midfielder, but that result feels like a good one from a Newcastle perspective, knocking Man Utd down a peg and keeping the Reds in touching distance as we look to fire our way back up the league over the coming weeks.

It's also a reminder of how beatable Man Utd can be at Old Trafford, with Amorim's weak tactics and the players' lack of quality or cohesion glaringly obvious despite the man advantage.

For now though, let's hope Newcastle can keep that momentum building and leave Marseille with a big result tonight to consolidate our strong start to the Champions League!
