Sven Botman signs! - Full details and reaction from Eddie Howe and Ross Wilson
After much speculation surrounding his Newcastle United future, Sven Botman has today put pen to paper on a new long term deal until 2030.
The Dutchman, who signed from Lille back in 2022, may have been suffering from persistent injury problems in the last two seasons, but there’s no denying he’s one the best pure defender at the club when fit.
The news will be met with a big sigh of relief from both Eddie Howe and the fans, as there has been much speculation surrounding Botman’s future since his first season turned out to be such a success.
Having previously been penned to a contract set to expire in the summer of 2027, it now looks like he’ll be around until at least 2030, similar to Sandro Tonali who also recently a contract extension: some stellar work from sporting director Ross Wilson there.
Botman and Howe react to extension
Speaking to the club, Botman has expressed his delight over how his stint on Tyneside has panned out so far, and is excited for what the future will bring for both him and the club as a whole.
“I’m really happy to sign this contract. This club has given me so much in the last three-and-a-half years.
“I’ve grown as a person and as a player here and I feel like I have so much more to give in the long term. That’s why both parties are really happy with this decision and I’m looking forward to what’s coming in the future here.”
Howe shared the 25-year-old‘s feeling, knowing he now has a core defender to help build his squad around.
“We’re delighted that Sven has committed his long-term future to the club. He has been an outstanding player for us since he joined and I firmly believe there’s more to come from him.
“Sven has a strong mentality and work ethic, which is clear every time he trains or plays. We value his presence on and off the pitch and l’m really pleased to see his long-term future secured here.”
Wilson “thrilled” by breakthrough
Since being appointed as sporting director, one of the top priorities Ross Wilson has had to sort out has been nailing down three fundamental players to new deals: Sandro Tonali, Sven Botman, and Tino Livramento.
On Botman, Wilson commented: “With Sven’s previous contract due to expire at the end of next season, it’s fantastic that we’ve secured his future here. I know Eddie and the players are equally thrilled.
“Sven feels settled in Newcastle, both in the city and within our squad, and we’re all excited to continue with him in our ranks.”
Monday’s announcement about Botman’s extension leaves just Livramento’s future to sort out, amidst intense interest from Manchester City.
Talks were reportedly put on hold towards the end of 2025, but it’s unclear what impact the fullback’s latest injury may have had on his stay with us, or if it’s harmed any interest Pep Guardiola may have had in the England international.
