Afner Ca signs for Newcastle - Full details, official photos and first interview

Newcastle United have confirmed the signing of 19-year-old Guinea-Bissau forward Afner Cá.

News broke on Saturday that Newcastle had won the race to sign Afner Cá after the 19-year-old had left Spanish side Levante after his contract expired.

It was reported that Newcastle had beaten the likes of Villarreal and Valencia to the signing of the teenager who only turned 19 a couple of weeks ago.

Afner Cá will head into the academy as a development player despite having made 27 first-team appearances for Levante last season.

Afner Cá was impressed with the club's project

Speaking to the official Newcastle United website, Cá spoke about how the project drew him in to sign for the club before going on to give an indication of his style of play.

“The project here, the lifestyle, and the club’s ambition made this the right move for me.

“I’m a forward who likes to find space, link play and work hard for the team. Scoring goals is a big part of my game, but my focus is always on contributing to the group, whatever helps the team win."

Newcastle is building for the future

Afner Cá joins a growing list of hotly tipped talent to join the club's academy this summer, along with the likes of young first-team signings Sean Steur, Ewen Jaoeun and Bazoumana Toure.

Newcastle are definitely building for the future, and while that may mean that progress for the first team may slow down, we do feel it's the right approach after an unsustainable meteoric rise of the last few years.

We'll be hoping to get a look at the 6'4" striker over pre-season as Eddie Howe does like to take an up close look at the young talent coming through.
