Alarming comments from Matthias Jaissle after Newcastle 0-1 Everton
Matthias Jaissle didn’t hide his frustration after Newcastle United suffered a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Everton at St James’ Park.
The German claims we abandoned his gameplan by pumping long balls to Osula, and highlighted our clear lack of confidence or playing style after such a pitiful display.
Jaissle claims players went against pre-match plan
Addressing Newcastle’s approach in possession, Jaissle made it clear that repeatedly playing long balls was never part of the game plan, while admitting his side lacked the bravery to play through Everton.
“It wasn’t the plan to shoot the long balls, it’s important to say that.
“If you just play long balls, it’s not the style Osula prefers and that was not the plan. We need to analyse this in depth, why we could not start the game how we planned. I’m responsible for that, to make it work.
“It was not good enough and it was not brave enough to penetrate the last line.”
The manager was also frustrated by the manner of Everton’s winning goal, pointing to Newcastle’s failure to react to a quickly taken free-kick after an unforced error.
“The goal came from an unforced error that led to a free-kick, but to be honest we were just sleeping. It’s so easy for them to take the quick free-kick and we were surprised. On a good day of course, Lukas (Hornicek) saves it.”
With confidence seemingly low within the squad, Jaissle called for togetherness and unity as Newcastle look to respond to another disappointing result.
“We have to stick together now, we have to show unity. It’s the only way.
“When the goals aren’t coming easily you lack confidence, it’s normal as a human being.”
“We saw during the week (the quality is there) but we need to take it to the pitch.
“It’s clear I have the responsibility to make it work as the manager of this club.”
Jaissle baffled by Newcastle display
Reflecting on the defeat, Jaissle admitted he was hugely disappointed by the difference between what he had seen in training and what his players produced on the pitch.
“Big frustration, big disappointment because we couldn’t transfer what we saw during the week.
“The team was really training on a high level in the approach how we actually wanted to play today.”
“Since the referee started the game, not much was seen. That’s difficult to understand, first of all. Of course, the fans, they’re frustrated, like we are.”
Jaissle was particularly concerned by the fact that Newcastle’s usual playing identity was nowhere to be seen, admitting that our confidence seemed to disappear despite a good week on the training ground.
“You didn’t see our playing style and that can’t happen.”
“It’s not easy to explain as it looked so good during the week (in training). The lads looked committed and the confidence was there.
“Today, from the start, the confidence was missing. We need to improve really fast.”
