Anthony Elanga injury update from Matthias Jaissle after Leeds defeat

Newcastle United could be without Anthony Elanga for an extended period after the Swedish international picked up an injury.

The winger was a notable absentee as Newcastle slumped to a 4-1 defeat to Leeds at Elland Road on Monday night, marking our first defeat of the season as Jacob Murphy took his place on the right wing..

Speaking before the match, Jaissle confirmed that Elanga is currently injured and set for more scans to determine how serious the injury is.

Jaissle's concerning comments 

After the game, Jaissle told the media that Elanga's injury "doesn't look good", suggesting the former Nottingham Forest man could be facing an extended spell out.

And his comments pre-match were similarly concerning, with Elanga set for another MRI scan this week to determine the full extent:

“Unfortunately, he is injured. We need to investigate further and in more detail to find out how long he will be out.

“We will miss him and hope he is back to play quickly. It could be [long-term]. We hope not. He will get another MRI next week, and we will see.”

It is a real concern and unwanted setback given our lack of depth on the right wing, coupled with Elanga's strong start to 2026/27.

The Swede scored in each of his first two Premier League appearances this season, netting breakaway goals against Liverpool and Spurs.

Elanga set to miss Sweden fixtures  

Elanga’s injury is expected to rule him out of Sweden’s upcoming fixtures in the UEFA Nations League, which are upcoming after Saturday's home clash with Hull City.

Further scans will take place this week to determine the severity of the problem and his expected return date, but he is almost certain to miss upcoming games against Romania, Poland and Bosnia.

For now, Newcastle will be hoping that Jaissle’s fears of a long-term absence are not realised, although the early indications aren't positive.
