Dan Burn issues injury update as Newcastle’s nine-man crisis begins to ease

Newcastle United captain Dan Burn has provided a hugely encouraging update on his recovery, with the defender now targeting a return immediately after the international break.

Burn is one of several senior players Newcastle are hoping to welcome back, with Matthias Jaissle’s squad having been stretched by injuries as NINE senior players missed Saturday’s 2-1 win over Hull.

Dan Burn offers positive injury update

The 34-year-old has been missing since the opening weekend of the season, when it was confirmed just hours before our 2-2 draw with Liverpool that he had rolled his ankle in training and would be sidelined until after the international break.

Burn was not included in the latest England squad, but his latest comments suggest he is getting very close to a return and has his sights set on Newcastle’s trip to Coventry City on Monday 12th October.

“My recovery is coming on well, I’m not in the cast anymore so I’m walking around now and building up strength.

“The international break helps so I don’t miss too many games and if all goes to plan, I can be back for that first game back after the international break.

“I can’t wait, I’m desperate to get back, and I’ll see you soon.”

It would be a huge boost to see big Dan Burn back available, with our new skipper able to bring leadership back to a young side lacking in senior voices, and a left-sided centre back option who could push Sven Botman following his mixed start to 2026/27.

Injury crisis on the mend?

Burn’s update is another positive sign, with the international break arriving at an ideal time for Jaissle and his injury-hit squad.

Alongside Burn, we were without Ewen Jaouen, Amar Dedic, Tino Livramento, Anthony Elanga, Nico Gonzalez, Joelinton, Jacob Ramsey and Will Osula against Hull, but there have been encouraging developments surrounding several of those players.

Bosnia boss Sergej Barbarez has indicated that Dedic should be ready for Newcastle’s first game after the break, while Elanga is also making good progress following his hamstring problem, with reports suggesting there is now hope he can return after the international break.

Nico Gonzalez is also working his way back from concussion, while Will Osula is targeting the Coventry game as he continues his recovery.

There is still a long way to go before all of those players are confirmed fit, but Burn’s latest update is certainly another reason for us Newcastle fans to be feeling more optimistic about the squad after the international break.
