Eddie Howe’s next move: Man Utd, England or an extended break?
Eddie Howe is reportedly considering an extended break from management following his Newcastle United departure, with Manchester United and England among the potential destinations further down the line.
The former Magpies boss left St James’ Park in July after almost five years in charge, having overseen one of the most successful periods in the club’s modern history.
Howe has no plans to return to management immediately
According to The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards, Howe currently has no plans to return to management and wants to take some time away from football.
48-year-old is understood to want to spend more time with his family after his hugely demanding spell on Tyneside, meaning a quick return to the dugout is not currently on his agenda.
However, managing England remains a long-term ambition for Howe, while Manchester United admire the former Newcastle boss, who can expect to see his name thrown into the mix should results not improve under Michael Carrick.
Edwards also reports that our former sporting director Dan Ashworth previously wanted Howe to replace Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford, although Man United ultimately appointed Ruben Amorim.
Howe leaves Newcastle with an impressive legacy
Howe took charge of Newcastle in November 2021, inheriting a side battling relegation before transforming the club’s fortunes.
He guided us to two Champions League qualifications and ended the club’s 70-year wait for a domestic trophy by winning the League Cup in 2025, creating a moment we’ll never forget for as long as we live.
After almost five years at St James’ Park, Howe decided to step down in July, with Matthias Jaissle subsequently appointed as his replacement.
It felt like the right time, as things had gone stale and Eddie looked tired, like a man who knew deep down that he needed a break.
For now, it appears Howe is in no rush to find his next job. But with England and Manchester United still among the options being discussed, his next steps will be one to keep an eye on.
