Ewen Jaouen agrees to join Newcastle after recent visit - Report
Newcastle United are on the hunt for a new goalkeeper this summer, with several names in the frame.
After some high-profile errors this season to add to the few he already had against his name, Nick Pope isn't the solid entity at the back he once was, and we expect Eddie Howe to be looking for a new Number 1 for next season.
James Trafford is once again high on the list after failing to secure his services in the last two summer windows, but the Magpies also have a few other options in their sights.
Brighton's Bart Verbruggen and RC Lens' Robin Risser have been mentioned several times, but recently, Stade Reims' young goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen has emerged as a target for the Magpies.
Ewen Jaouen 'agrees' move to Newcastle
That has now taken a huge leap forward if transfer journalist Sacha Tavolieri is to be believed.
Tavolieri took to X on Friday to claim that Jaouen has agreed a deal in principle to join Newcastle in the summer, with the two clubs set to thrash out a deal worth around €20 million (£17 million) after he visited Newcastle recently.
The 20-year-old would come in to compete for the No.1 spot, according to Tavolieri.
Ewen Joauen seems like one for the future
Ewen Jaouen is a player who Newcastle have been linked with, so there could potentially be some truth to this one, but as for it being 'agreed', we'll have to wait and see if a more reputable source picks up on the story and can confirm it.
It's interesting how Tavolieri says Joauen will compete for the No.1 spot, but doesn't name Nick Pope as that No.1. Could his time at Newcastle be up?
Ewen Jaouen doesn't feel like an immediate replacement for Pope, having spent his short career playing in the second tier of French football for Reims. He could come in as a second option behind someone like Trafford, Verbruggen or Risser, even though that trio aren't much older than Joauen himself; they've just played at a higher level.
Seconds after wrapping up this article, The Chronicle released a story saying that their sources inside the club deny any claims that Jaouen visited the club recently or that any agreement was close.
