Newcastle interested in signing Ewen Jaouen - L'Equipe
Newcastle United have a clear plan in mind when it comes to finding a replacement for Nick Pope; bring in someone much younger.
Nick Pope looks set to lose his title as Newcastle's No.1 next season. While he may retain the shirt number, he's almost certainly going to lose his place on the team sheet.
Newcastle are keen to add a younger goalkeeper to the ranks as a long-term successor for Pope, and depending on who comes through the door, it could be an immediate replacement.
The Magpies have been credited with an interest in James Trafford again, Brighton's Bart Verbruggen who has been first-choice for the Seagulls this season, and Lens' Robin Risser. All are in their early 20s and have plenty of first-team experience.
Newcastle join race for Reims goalkeeper
A new report from French outlet L'Equipe has claimed Newcastle have another French keeper in their sights.
20-year-old Ewen Jaouen of Ligue 2 side, Reims, is now on the radar of Newcastle, Tottenham and Brighton.
Jaouen has conceded just 32 goals in 33 Ligue 2 games this season and has kept 15 clean sheets in the process.
Tottenham and Brighton seem to be our competition whenever a goalkeeper is mentioned, and with Bart Verbruggen on our list, a move for the Dutch keeper could trigger quite a merry-go-round in the summer.
Jaouen more of a 'project' player?
With Spurs and Brighton also keen on Jaouen, English scouts have obviously been impressed with what they've seen from the young goalkeeper.
We'd suggest that, having spent his season playing in Ligue 2, he's perhaps not as Premier League-ready as Robin Risser, so for us it really depends on whether Newcastle is hoping to make an immediate change between the sticks or if they're willing to go another season with Pope.
James Trafford is still the priority by the looks of things, but Risser and Verbruggen will be close behind. We imagine Ewen Jaouen is further down the list and potentially considered more of a 'project player'.
But again, we're just happy to see the club building for the future and not putting all its eggs in one basket, as it feels like we've been doing for the last few years.
