Ewen Jaouen lists his strengths in first interview as Newcastle United player

Most Newcastle United fans will have had no idea who Ewen Jaouen was before the club was linked with a move for him.

The 20-year-old goalkeeper was playing in the second tier of French football, and while he was certainly labelled one to watch in his home country after being billed as a future France No.1 at 18, there won't have been many over on this side of the Channel who'd have known much about him.

Since the rumours started gathering pace, fans started to do their own research and it's safe to say that the excitement around this signing has grown.

Ewen Jaouen is not expected to be Eddie Howe's first choice next season, but he will certainly be pushing whoever is and that's perfect.

Ewen Jaouen is decent from 12 yards

In his first interview as a Newcastle United player for the official website, Ewen Jaouen gave an insight into what he can offer as a 'modern goalkeeper' and offered up a surprise bonus, too.

"I describe myself as a modern goalkeeper. I like to play with my feet, and the most important thing is I like to do saves, also. I like one-v-one situations; I think I have good reflexes but I like to describe myself as a modern goalkeeper.

"I like penalties also. Scoring also. I hope I don't have to score penalties, but if I can save some penalties, that would be great."

Jaouen had a 'canny' first day

With Anthony Gordon now away to Barcelona, that's a spot open for a new penalty taker if the young keeper fancies stepping up. Although, after Nick Woltemade's penalty last season against Nottingham Forest, we'd like to think we have that covered.

Speaking of which, did you notice Anthony Gordon's penalty for England last night? Has Big Nick been passing tips?

Back to Ewen Jaouen, in his behind-the-scenes video on the website you can see that he's already fitting in on Tyneside, telling Ross Wilson that his day has been 'canny'.

We already like this lad.
