Ewen Jaouen speaks out after first day training at Newcastle United
Ewen Jaouen was Newcastle United's first signing of the summer and has now had his first day of training at his new club.
The 20-year-old Frenchman arrived at Newcastle from Stade de Reims for £18 million all the way back at the start of June.
Having already been tipped as a future France No.1 when he was just 18, Jaouen arrives at Newcastle full of promise.
Jaouen has been told, however, that his role this season is to be backup to the first-choice keeper, whoever that may be. It's currently Nick Pope, but it is expected that Pope will leave this summer and be replaced, with James Trafford and Zion Suzuki possible candidates to replace him.
Ewen Jaoeun is loving life on Tyneside already
Ewen Jaouen reported for training on Monday as the bulk of the squad returned to The KNOX for pre-season preparations.
Speaking to the club's media team, Ewen Jaouen said he feels like he's on a mission now that he's in the kit and wearing the badge, going on to say how the goalkeeper team feels like a strong unit already.
"I'm happy to have the kit on me. Wearing the jersey, the logo also feels good. Feels on a kind of a mission, but yeah, really happy to have it on.
"I can see that the keeper team is really, really nice. It's the first day but I feel we are really strong together for the first day."
We'll soon see how good this lad is
We're sure we'll see plenty of Jaouen in action throughout pre-season, but it remains to be seen how much time he gets in the first team throughout the season.
Eddie Howe does like to switch out his goalkeepers for cup competitions, especially if we're facing lower-league opposition, so he may get his chance to shine during the cups.
Our big concern right now is who is going to be ahead of him in the pecking order, because without ever having seen him play, we'd say that we'd rather see him in goal on the opening day than Nick Pope. Sorry, Popey.
