“I can’t wait to go back” - Sean Steur loving life at Newcastle United
Sean Steur says he is loving life at Newcastle, with the 18-year-old settling into his first move away from home and keen to keep improving on the pitch.
The midfielder spoke to FCUpdate after Tuesday's 4-0 win for the Netherlands Under-21s against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Steur settling in at Newcastle
"I'm going back to England on Thursday, which I'm really looking forward to. I'm just having a great time there and I can't wait to go back."
On living away from his parents, he added:
"My parents try to be there as often as possible, but I'm a bit more on my own now and more independent. It's a really nice area with friendly people. I've basically got everything I need, so I can't complain."
It's easy to forget, he's still an 18-year-old lad living away from home for the first time. We can get caught up in his performances and what he might become, but hearing how comfortable he feels here is a positive in its own right.
Steur keen to keep improving
On his development at Newcastle, he said:
"Things are going well, but I can still improve physically. On the ball, everything can actually get much better. I don't think I'm at my peak yet. So I'm looking forward to developing that."
Steur also accepted a telling-off from Michael Reiziger for taking on long-range shots against Bosnia, telling Sportnieuws.nl:
"The telling-off was actually fair enough. I felt I had to try from distance because things weren't working. But he was right. We needed to stay patient and not force things, because that never works in your favour."
Jaissle has already praised a similar response at Newcastle. After the win over Hull, he highlighted how well Steur had reacted to criticism following the Leeds defeat, while setting him the challenge of sustaining that level over a full 90 minutes.
For me, that Hull performance is why there is so much to like here. Steur has already shown he can give us composure and control in midfield, and he recognises the physical work needed to do it for longer. If he can build on that, we could have a seriously good midfielder on our hands.
