Injury update on Fabian Schär, Lewis Miley & Tino Livramento from Matthias Jaissle
There’s plenty to pick apart following the 3-1 loss to Everton at Murrayfield.
One of the key topics up for discussion was the club's obvious need for new signings. But another area that the club needs to focus on is the treatment table, and the fitness of those we’ve not seen yet.
The journalist put the question to the manager, with updates on Fabian Schär, Lewis Miley and Tino Livramento. He also provided an update on what Dan Burn brings to the team on his return.
Schär, Miley and Livramento latest
One player that has featured in preseason already was Fabian Schär. He picked up a knock early in preseason, though he has been back in training.
“He [Schär] is on the way back now. Hopefully, in the next few days, he will be included in first-team training, then we need to see if he gets some minutes at the weekend”
With two games to play at the weekend, it’s the last chance players have before Liverpool. In terms of starting centre backs, we have two left in Botman and Thiaw. Burn and Schär being able to feature would be a big plus.
Thankfully, Dan Burn has returned, though he’ll be very short on training due to England’s extended World Cup.
Lewis Miley is another curious case. He's only a young man, but he’s off the back of a season riddled with weird injuries. The end of his season was curtailed by a broken fibula, which has seen him miss all of preseason.
Tino Livramento picked up a knock while away with England before featuring for the side at the World Cup and is yet to feature over pre-season, but could be back in training soon.
“I would say they’re [Livramento and Miley] a bit the same as Fabian.
"We’re also hoping that in the next few days they can be integrated into the team sessions. Then, hopefully, they will get some minutes after that.”
At least with Miley we’ve seen him training with the squad, though Livramento could still be some way off.
The need for signings grows
It feels like all we write in this section, but it’s stopped being a small background noise at this point. We let Trippier and Krafth go in the summer, and while I’m not suggesting either should have stayed, we knew they were going.
Livramento got injured on the 16th of June; that’s almost two months ago now, and the right back situation has not been resolved. Lewis Hall is our only obvious first-team full-back going into a key season. While Burn has played there a lot under Howe, you’d imagine Jaissle wouldn’t see that as his best role given the lack of pace.
The squad is bare, and that is going to be really obvious on the weekend when Jaissle likely fields two different teams on both days. While we continue to hear that we expect to sign at least three players, there have been no signings to the outfield since Bamba joined in early July.
As of today, there are three weeks left in the window, and the squad is in desperate need of at least five players.
