Jürgen Klopp drops Woltemade but keeps faith in Thiaw
Nick Woltemade has been left out of Jürgen Klopp's latest Germany squad, while Malick Thiaw has retained his place.
The Newcastle striker, currently on loan at Juventus, misses out on the final two Nations League group games against Serbia and the Netherlands. Klopp has named a 24-man squad, having selected 44 players across his first international window in September and October.
Woltemade misses out after Juventus award
The omission comes just days after Woltemade collected Juventus' Player of the Month award for October.
Big Nick scored in each of his first three Europa League appearances for the Italian side and played the full 90 minutes in Sunday's 2-0 win over Napoli. After a slow start to his loan spell, he has been getting more opportunities under Luciano Spalletti.
That improvement hasn't been enough to keep his Germany place, with Niclas Füllkrug returning to the squad. The 33-year-old Werder Bremen striker has scored nine Bundesliga goals this season and leads the division's scoring charts.
Klopp said his selection had been made harder by the number of players who deserved a call-up. Kai Havertz and Younes Ebnoutalib join Füllkrug among his centre-forward options, leaving Woltemade to continue his progress at Juventus during the break.
Thiaw keeps his place despite Newcastle omission
Thiaw has survived the cut after starting both of Germany's October games, completing 90 minutes in the 2-0 win over Serbia and the goalless draw in Greece.
Those two clean sheets helped his case under Klopp, who has kept him involved despite Fabian Schär returning to Newcastle's starting line-up for our last three matches.
Germany travel to Belgrade to face Serbia on Friday 13 November before hosting the Netherlands in Berlin on Monday 16 November.
Before then, Thiaw will be hoping to regain his Newcastle place for Saturday's trip to Fulham.
