Kevin Keegan tribute planned by Wor Flags for season opener against Liverpool

Newcastle United fans were rocked by the announcement of the death of Kevin Keegan on Monday.

It's hard to put into words and even harder to explain to non-Newcastle fans just how much Kevin Keegan meant to the people of Newcastle.

Although if any other fanbase is likely to understand the love for Special K, it would be Liverpool after Keegan scooped up three league titles, two FA Cups, two UEFA Cups and the European Cup as well as two English Super Cups, now known as the Community Shield, during his time as a player at Anfield.

While Keegan's legacy is entirely different at each club, he's adored by both sets of fans, and as fate would have it, the two sides are due to meet for their first game of the new season at St James' Park.

Newcastle's season opener has taken on a new meaning

Originally, this was all set up to be a very spicy affair after Liverpool's hijacking of Victor Munoz earlier in the window added to the bitterness that still exists following the Alexander Isak transfer last summer.

However, there's now a chance that both fanbases could be united in grief rather than separated by rivalry when the two sides meet on Sunday 23rd August at 4:30pm, live on Sky Sports.

Wor Flags have now confirmed that they will be paying tribute to the late, great Kevin Keegan with their display ahead of kick-off in that fixture, as we suspected they might.
