Lewis Hall injury scare explained by Thomas Tuchel after England 2-3 Spain

Lewis Hall was left on the bench as England suffered a 3-2 defeat to Spain at Wembley on Saturday night, with Thomas Tuchel explaining that the Newcastle United defender had suffered an injury scare earlier in the week.

The 22-year-old had returned to training by Friday, but Tuchel opted not to take any risks with Hall in such ‘high speed’ affair that would’ve seen him go up against Lamine Yamal.

Tuchel explains Lewis Hall injury scare

Speaking after the defeat, Tuchel revealed that Hall had missed some training sessions earlier in the uweek, leading to some hesitation over whether to use the Newcastle defender against Spain.

“Lewis missed some training sessions with a bit of an injury scare, so that’s why I was a bit hesitant to put him out there today, but he’s an option.

“He trained well at the end of the week, but he was out of training at the beginning of the week and we just didn’t want to take any risk because there was a lot of high speed running and defending to do.”

That will come to Newcastle supporters, with Tuchel’s explanation suggesting that Hall was left out as a precaution rather than because of an real setback.

Hall remains firmly in England’s thinking at left-back, with Tuchel also pointing out that he is the player in the current squad who regularly plays that position for his club.

Let’s keep our fingers crossed

It is another reminder of how stretched Newcastle’s squad has been by injuries, even if we’ve had several positive updates during the international break.

We have already received several encouraging updates, with Dan Burn, Amar Dedic, Joelinton and others closing in on potential returns after the break.

The hope will now be that Hall has no reaction to the issue and can return to full training quickly, with England facing Czech Republic on Tuesday.
